Early Years Curriculum

At Wandsworth Preparatory School, practitioners use the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, published on the 27th of March 2012, to guide everyday teaching and learning.

The Early Learning goals

The Early Learning goals set out what most children are expected to achieve by the end of the Foundation Stage. They are organised into seven areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Subjects

English

At Wandsworth Preparatory School, English is designed to give students a strong foundation in language and literacy skills. The curriculum is structured around six areas of learning: communication and language; physical development; personal, social and emotional development; literacy; mathematics; and understanding the world.

Students are taught to listen and respond to others, speak clearly and confidently, and understand and follow instructions. They are also introduced to new vocabulary and concepts through stories, rhymes, and songs.

Pupils are taught the foundations of reading and writing, including letter recognition, phonics, and basic sight words. They are also encouraged to express themselves creatively through writing, drawing, and other forms of self-expression.

English curriculum at Wandsworth Preparatory School is designed to be inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate for young children. It is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in language and literacy skills, and to encourage them to be curious, creative, and confident learners.

Maths

At Wandsworth Preparatory School, students are introduced to basic concepts such as counting, shape, and measurement. They are also encouraged to develop their problem-solving and reasoning skills through hands-on activities and games.

Some specific math skills that students may learn in Reception include:

  • Counting objects and identifying numerals
  • Comparing and ordering numbers
  • Adding and subtracting small numbers
  • Recognizing and naming basic 2D and 3D shapes
  • Understanding and using language related to time, such as “yesterday,” “today,” and “tomorrow”
  • Measuring length, weight, and capacity using non-standard units

In addition to learning math concepts and skills, students at Wandsworth Preparatory School are also encouraged to develop positive attitudes towards math. This includes developing confidence in their own ability to do math, as well as developing an interest in and enjoyment of math activities.

To support students in their math learning, teachers at Wandsworth Preparatory School use a variety of teaching methods, including whole-class instruction, small-group work, and individual activities. They also use a variety of materials and manipulatives, such as number lines, counting bears, and geoboards, to help students understand and apply mathematical concepts.
