Our reception children are busy little people. We’re often told by parents and carers that their children only tell them what they had for lunch or that they just played all day, so we wanted to share what a typical day looks like in our reception class.

Provision is carefully planned to ensure that there are opportunities to access all areas of the EYFS (The Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum at all times to support the individual child’s learning and development. We ensure that class provisions are also amended and changed according to the children’s needs and interests to stretch and challenge children accordingly. This could be daily or even throughout the day, where needed.
Learning is tailored towards individuals to ensure that additional support or challenge is also provided. There are a range of challenges that all children can engage with throughout the week linked to the EYFS curriculum areas as well as providing the opportunity to learn through open ended, self-directed play.
Each day there are different specialist subjects:
Monday – PE + Karate
Tuesday – Spanish
Wednesday – PE and Music
Thursday – French
Friday – Forest School (half a day)
Our reception operates on a free flow basis. This means that children are able to access both the indoor and outdoor areas for their play (continuous provision) at all times (extreme weather conditions permitting). Children are also encouraged to help set up areas of interest, such as the role play area, to get them involved in the day to day life of reception.
In reception children participate in half-termly projects with the continuous provision set up both indoor and outdoor that links to the project. Throughout the year, children are given opportunities to ask their own questions and set out to find the answers. Half-termly memorable experiences such as trips and visiting speakers help to deepen their learning . Past experiences have included a visit to the local fire station, a trip to The Natural History Museum and talks from experts such as a bee keeper.
Finally, optional home learning begins in September to ensure that all parents are aware of what the children have been learning at school with ideas of how they can then be supported at home.
